Private School Entry – Standardized Tests

The ISEE (Independent School Entrance Examination) and the SSAT (Secondary School Aptitude Test) are used by admissions personnel in most private schools.

These academic tests show the relative performance of one child to another. They also give an indication of a child’s academic aptitude.

Both tests are administered
at 2 levels:

Middle Level, grades 6-8 Lower Level, grades 5-7
Upper Level, grades 9-12 Upper Level, grades 8-11

The tests measure Verbal and Math skills.

The Verbal section assesses your skills in comprehension and vocabulary, and includes an essay.

The Math section assesses your skills in arithmetic, algebra and geometry.
In addition to having the academic knowledge, test-taking skills are also important.

The best way to prepare for these tests is to start early. Build up a good vocabulary by reading as much as possible, especially the classics. Look up difficult words and memorize their meanings.

At least 2 months before you take the test, call A+ Tutors (805-490-4425) and take a preparatory course where you will not only learn the fundamentals of the Math and Verbal sections, but also the various test-taking techniques which are necessary for a good score.
